1. What we collect

For a tipper, we collect only what a payment needs to go through:

  • the phone number or card used to pay, handled by our payment providers (see below);
  • the amount tipped and who it was sent to.

For a worker or venue account, we also collect:

  • your name and M-Pesa number, used to verify your account and pay you out;
  • an email address, if you sign in with Google or email and password;
  • your tip and payout history.

2. How we use it

To process tips and payouts, to authenticate you when you log in, to show your own tip and payout history on your dashboard, and to respond if you contact us. We don't sell your data, and we don't use it to show you ads.

3. Who we share it with

Only the providers that actually move the money or run the account, each only gets what it needs to do that:

  • Safaricom M-Pesa, to collect a tip and pay one out;
  • Paystack, for card payments;
  • Google, if you choose to sign in with a Google account;
  • Africa's Talking, to deliver a login verification code by SMS.

We never sell your data to anyone else.

4. Cookies and sessions

tips.ke uses one cookie to keep you signed in after you log in. It's not used to track you across other sites. A tipper sending a tip doesn't need an account and gets no tracking cookie at all.

5. Data retention

Tip and payout records are kept for as long as your account exists, both for your own history and because financial records generally need to be kept for tax and compliance reasons. If you close your account, we delete what we're not legally required to keep.

6. Your rights

You can see your own tip and payout history any time from your dashboard. To request a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion of your account, reach out through our Contact page.

7. Security

We never see or store your M-Pesa PIN or full card number, those go directly to Safaricom or Paystack. Account access is protected by phone verification, Google sign-in, or a password, whichever you've set up.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be posted here with an updated date.
